SHOTGUN CLINIC A BIG HIT

SHOTGUN CLINIC A BIG HIT

A big shout out of Thank You goes to Reggie Fitzgerald and our volunteers for putting on the Shotgun Sports clinic this weekend. Reggie said he originally thought he might just get a handful of new folks out to shoot some trap for an hour or so, but before he knew it, we had volunteer helpers and coaches from Trap, Skeet and 5 Stand ready to step up and make a day of it. Throw in a beautiful spring afternoon and a club-sponsored cookout, and we ended up with over 30 members and their kids, grandkids and guests coming out for an afternoon of food, firearms and fellowship.

Lunch and a safety brief were served up first, and then it was off to the fields in 3 squads. Reggie ran the Trap field, while Dick Brame, Frank Langston, Dave Ernst and James Gibson coached at 5 stand on some very challenging target arrays. Over at skeet, Mike Bowers and George Pickering gave pointers on use of the skeet machines and helpful strategies for beginners. The wind made it a bit challenging at first, but no one let it stand in the way of a good time.

We had lots of family members out there, with some great kids and grandkids learning the ropes. We decided Doug Peacock’s teenaged grandsons were ringers-they said they had shot “a little skeet” but that it was their first try at trap, but there sure were a lot of dead birds out there between the two of them. Mark Lashley brought his adorable daughter, in unicorn-themed ear pro no less, who said she’s ready for a bench rest rifle class, and Bill Rabon even showed up with 3 generations of his family’s menfolk.

Judging by the kids we had out there today, the future of Buccaneer is looking strong!

A good time was had by all-thanks to Reggie and all our volunteers. Reggie also said to let everyone know he will be starting regular Trap matches back up soon, so watch the club calendar and come out and join us!

PS- several participants asked when we were going to do this for rifle and pistol events. If any of the other discipline leaders want to step up and host a clinic, the board will be happy to spring for lunch! Also, Tami mentioned if we have enough interest for a Fall Family Fun Day this October, we could set up fun shoots for the kids and some friendly competitions for members at all the disciplines and do a big club-wide cookout. If that sounds like something you’d like to help out with, please shoot her an email.
